Roof window flashing

Please forgive me if i'm off the mark but do we have to buy the flashing kits that come with velux roof windows, or can we 'make our own' (the roofer that is!)

Its just im shocked at how expensive this has become.
Our roof windows cost £350 & the flashing kits are nearly £200 so im just trying to find a way of saving?!

I think you have to have the kit as it needs a few seperate parts including the weather tight seal and other bits,

you could indeed make your own, it's the same as everything, you could amke your own windows, doors etc etc, however the velux flashing kit has been specifically designed for the exact product and if installed to manufacturer spec, will be guaranteed against leaks - how would your roofer propose to flash it? lead and zinc could easily be more expensive or would they form some kind of metal flashing themselves?
