Hi Everyone,
I have just passed my driving test today and was looking at cars. I know nothing about them and was just wondering which cars people would recommend. My specs are the following
1) No more than 1.5l
2) Small car
3) Fuel efficient/cheap to run
4) Possibly cheap road tax
5) No more than 4-5 years of age
6) Max Mileage: 60000
My budget for second hand car and insurance is £6000. Is this figure realistic? I want to choose the car and then do the insurance price comparison.
I will be doing the pass plus in due course.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you in advance!
Edit: I'm guessing I can't afford a new car + insurance right? I could pay per month as I have the lump sum.

What will you be using it for? pottering around town/work, or some serious distance driving?
large/small family etc etc???0 -
Wow, so many replies already! Thank you!
Likes: I've been learning in the corsa, so something similar would be ideal, I also want to fit a mp3 player system in
Dislikes: Because of my age, I don't want to drive a tatty car, it needs to at least look a bit professional
For now, I will just need it to go into town (10mins) and city centre (23mins). I can walk to work. But in the future, may need it for work as I'm looking to change jobs.
I live at home and don't have my own family.0 -
I"m actually interested in this one myself, I've recently moved to London and I'm trying to choose between motorcycles and small cars. No ties.Intern for Yipiii.co.uk0

These are apparently the cheapest to insure. Id go for the Polo myself
though its highest group there.
Make and ModelEngine Size Insurance Group Year
Vauxhall Corsa GLS 1.2 litre 2 2000-2006
Ford Fiesta Studio 1.25 litre 2 2002-2007
Volkswagen Polo 1.2 litre 4 2004-2005
Peugeot 106 Zest 1.1 litre 3 1996-2003
Renault Clio Campus 1.2 litre 1 2007-2008
In London - Id look at something even smaller, like a VW Fox.0 -
Thanks hethmar, what do you mean by insurance group?0

I been driving 3 1/2 years and decided on a KA as first car:
Cost £1000.
98 plate, insurance never over £600/yr. (i am now 28 male).
Its cheap to run/repair, don't need main dealers. parts are cheap and freely available.
Its a 1.3, so more power than corsa's, but not OTT.
Initially, to build up my NCD, before getting a 'propper car'.
RE: mp3 system, shouldnt be a problem in any car tbh.0 -
Have you checked out Peugeot's Just Add Fuel offer. Basically if you are over 25, you can get a brand new car, insurance, road tax, etc. for around £200 a month and all you have to do is pay for the petrol.
A Brand new Peugeot 107 is less than £200 a month
Peugeot 207(similar to the corsa) is about £210 a month
And if you're looking for something a bit more professional, a 308 is about £260 a month.
Considering, new drivers would be expected to pay around £200-300 a month just for the insurance, these are amazingly good deals.0 -

This was my first point of protocol, the new scheme has changed and you needed least 2 years no claims in order to qualify. This has changed since Jan as my cousin is on this same deal but he's only 22!0
