Oyster

Hello,

I noticed that I had two older student oyster cards that I had a balance on and as such I called the Oyster help line where the transfer took place and I was told that I would need to tap in at a selected station to get the credit on my Oyster card. Perfectly fine, I figured that it would incur a small charge directly taping in and out within 2 minutes, however it turns out that I was charged the full penalty fare.

How does this make any sense? I was behind the barriers for a maximum of 30 seconds and they charge the full penalty fare as if I hadn't tapped out? I was expecting a small fee however not one this large.

Just contact them via their website, you'll prolly get the full fund back.

  • If you contact them and explain they should refund it. When you tap in and out that quickly i think it assumes one of the taps was an error and deletes it...then you don't have a tap out to correspond with your tap in and you get the penalty fare.

The clocking system at my work is the same, if you swipe twice in succession it will disregard the second one

A penalty fare is £50. You were charged a maximum fare of up to £7.40 if you touched out within 2 minutes or a minimum fare if you touched out within 30 minutes.

You should have been told that the touch in must occur as part of a normal journey.

There is a perfectly simple reason why the maximum fare is deducted: people could pass Oyster cards between people when leaving/entering the station, thus avoiding paying the full fare.

If you take your Oyster card to the station, they may be able to "resolve" your journey and remove the charge. It would have been better doing this immediately after the incident.

Perhaps they meant that you were to tap in at the ticket machine displaying the Oyster sign?

I had a credit due to me on my Oyster and was told to tap in at the ticket machine at the station I originally obtained my Oyster card.

You may also find that the penalty fare is refunded - I tapped in at a station once and forgot to tap out as the ticket barrier was open when I went through but I received an email to say that I could collect the refund from my selected station ticket machine.

ETA Meant to say that when I went through the open barrier, I didn't get the whole fare refunded, just the difference between the standard fare and the penalty fare
