Own survey on new build?

We are hoping to buy a new build property (nothing seems to be happening at the moment but that's another story). The mortgage company (Nationwide) have done a valuation survey which we paid £325 for but obviously this means nothing, especially as we are only borrowing just over 50% of the property's value. Do we need to get our own survey done on a new build? I had been told that it wouldn't be necessary to have one for a new build with NHBC certificate but now wondering if we should... Its not finished yet so at the moment there isn't much to see!
There is no such thing as a free lunch. Its only free because you've paid for it.

Noone can have everything they want and the sooner you learn that the better.

When we bought our new build in 2001 we only had the standard valuation survey done by our lenders. They did go back just before we moved in to check that the kitchen / bathrooms had been fitted but that was it. Not sure what else you could have done? They only want to see the plans (or house if it is standing) to check it's worth the dosh.

NHBC - check the fine print, we've found out it's very hard to get them to accept responsibility for fixing things. Always best to go back to your builders first (if you do have problems) - do not sign off your snagging list until you are entirely happy.

That said, we got Westbury to come out 4 years after finishing due to a sub standard shower tray that leaked everywhere.
