PayPal - Bah!

My son bought a phone on ebay and he didn't have quite enough in his account so the payment bounced putting his PayPal account £154 into debit. His bank charged him another £25 for going over his OD limit.
PayPal asked him to 'remedy his negative balance' after calling him, and my son (having received his student loan) gave them a debit card payment.
The status of his PayPal account stayed at -£154 for a few days and the status of the payment was something like 'payment from bank pending until October 12th'.
Yesterday (October 11th), PayPal called him again. "Your account is in negative balance, can you sort it out?" He told them he had plenty of money in his bank account and should they not wait until October 12th? They said that (and I quote) "the bank have refused that payment as well, you'll have to pay on the phone using another card".
Cue me. I get on the phone and give them mydebit card to the tune of £154. All done and dusted. You think?
Today, son checks his PayPal account and his balance is £0 paid from his bank account. Meanwhile, I call my bank and my payment of £154 is pending to go to PayPal.
I call PayPal who tell me there's nothing they can do and I will have to wait for the payment to his son's PayPal, transfer it to my PayPal and then I can transfer it back to my bak account. This will take 5-7 working days.
"Why did you tell my son his bank had refused the payment when they obviously hadn't?" No idea.
Bah!
I know my son is an idiot, but really.
...and breathe...

I guess hindsight says next time he should call his bank first to check if they did cancel the payment from his account (or to ensure he has funds to buy in the first place
).
If you want your money back quicker, why don't you get him to transfer the money to his account then over to yours first; how quickly will Paypal transfer it between Paypal accounts and would you have to pay a fee?Toyota - 'Always a better way', avoid buying Toyota.0 -
Thanks grayme-m. I know that it's my son who's the one at fault here, but PayPal did mislead us when they said that his bank had "definitely" refused the payment.
Anyway, my payment hit his PayPal account this morning and he has started the transfer back out to his bank account.
At least we both bank with the same bank (HSBC for him and FD for me) so when he does transfer it to me it will be immediate.
I've calmed down a bit now.
