Recommended laptop for DS?

As a Christmas/Birthday present, we are treating DS to a laptop. We are getting this so he always has access to do his homework (our desktop one is always being used by myself, DS and DD). DS will use it for homework and, knowing him, YouTube.
We have been recommended the Sony Vaio Brand. Would you say this is a good make? Are there any other brands that do well, laptop wise?
Just for info, our desktop tower and keyboard is Dell. Our monitor is Packard Bell. We did have a Packard Bell computer, however, it broke, and someone did advise they weren't great, (something to do with not being able to replace separate parts as the insides were all pretty much fused together?), and that Dell were much better, hence our purchase.
Is Dell another good make to consider for a laptop? OH has a Dell laptop but it's a work one and he doesn't say much about it, TBH.
Cheers, Birdy

If you are going to spend that kind of money, I'd get an entry level Macbook Pro. It'll be more hardy, the battery last longer and the resale value be higher. In addition to that, you won't have the worries about viruses etc that you get with Windows.
Dell is OK but not fantastic with the consumer Inspiron range. The business Latitudes are built far better but are a lot more expensive.0 -
No need to spend that kind of money on a laptop. £300 should take care of it.0

This.
I can't understand why people pay so much money for expensive laptops when the things they will use it for would be done exactly the same on a laptop that is half or a third of the price.
If you only want to use it for word processing and browsing then something like this is fine at £279.98.

Spend the extra £20 to get the upgraded version.0 -

Good all round connectivity. As long as the build quality is good, it looks ideal.0
