New gas pipe - fair quote?

Hi there,

I have a gas fireplace being replaced soon and I've been told that the current gas pipe going to the old fireplace needs to be replaced (something about moving from imperial 12mm to metric 15mm). Now while I'm prepared to admit that it's something that needs to be done I have been quoted £320 for the job and that seems expensive to me. I live in a semi and the pipe in question is running across the width of the house, but that wouldn't be more than 3m to replace.

Any ideas? Even if it's a fair price, please let me know as I have no idea!

Cheers

That does seem expensive, my husband is a corgi reg engineer and would charge a max of 250 if it took the whole day to replace. If it is only 3m then i would have thought it would take about half a day so costing around 180.

Good heavens what a rip off Xav.
To get from whatever imperial size to metric the part will cost about £1 max.
Bit more copper pipe about £10.
Time... well even if its a big job say half a day £150 but it really is only a simple couple of hours job by the sound of it.
Now if the old gas pipe is lead theits going to be a bit more but £320 quid !!!!!!!!!!!! No way

The width of a house(semi) approx 4.5m. Now if he has to replace the pipe back to the meter on the opp side of the house.

2.4m up the wall, 4.5m across, and 2.4m back down to the meter, if it is straight run(doughtful) plus fittings.
So, he might have to take up carpets, floorboards up in 2 bedrooms, ladding etc,

Just ask the fitter exactly what is involved.
