Well, those who said the rag was a leftover from working on the car were correct, it was used when the brake fluid was changed I'm told, so perhaps fortunate we didn't go in guns a blazing lol. I think the problem was we were so wary after being told that a full service had been done only to find it really hadn't, this topped with seemingly being avoided by some members of staff made us all the more wary I guess.

Anyway, knock has gone as promised and service has been done so it would be unfair of me to name and shame I think (though it has been mentioned above...)

In my experience when a car sales garage tells you they will service a car before collection it means an oil and filter change

which still were not done. We had asked for a full service, which according to vauxhall meant all the above. We had it in writing that all would be done....none were.
