Swift Advances - Possible PPI claim?

I had a loan with Swift Advances which I settled in 2005, I have read various other stories about Swift on here, and even the mortgage broker who dealt with my remortgage from Swift referred to them as "legalised money lenders". My problem is, I have none of the supporting paper work and I have read that they defend all claims vigorously. Am I wasting my time? I would dearly love to get some money back from them, they almost cost me my home and on a loan of (IIRC) about 12k, cost me a settlement figure of 28k, which took a huge chunk out the equity on the flat. Is this a non starter without the paperwork?
