Curry's damaged my TV while repairing....

I've had a 50" TV for 2 years. I paid £877.

It went in for repair due to a faulty circuit board under the SoGA.

When I received it back, the screen was smashed (possibly done in the ware house or done in transit). Curry's have said it's a write off and are willing to offer me £450 as a contribution towards a new TV.

I feel that this amount is totally unjustified considering they caused the damage.

How much should I be expecting to get at the very least?

Even though it is their fault, you still have to take into account that the TV was two years old when it developed the fault. So you won't be entitled to all your money back.

Although I think roughly half it's value isn't reasonable for 2 years use. I would expect a TV to last at least 5 - 6 years (if not longer, depending on usage). I think at least another £100 to £150 should be added to their offer. But other's opinions might differ.

This TV seems very cheap for a 50". I think a life span of 5-6 years also would be reasonable.

Though another member made an interesting point recently in a similar thread -- that TVs don't necessarily loose their value on an equal basis -- for example, over 6 years may loos 30% in the first year, 20% in the second year... you get the point.

Saying that I would be asking for more than that, in the £550-£650 IMO would be reasonable. This is also assuming they are offering cash and not credit. If you are willing to accept credit you may be able to negotiate a higher price if you was to take cash.

That was me - and I was about to make the same point again. :)

That said, I'd still push for more than £450 - the golden rule is to never accept the first offer.

I would not accept the first offer either, but just incase they won't budge - a 2 year old TV would have more than halved in value just because technology has moved on and prices have massively dropped for TV's.

You can probably get a better TV 50" for that much money now.

Have a look on the Currys website and look for a similar spec 50" plasma and as for that amount, i dont think you should be out of pocket because they damaged it

EDIT: Just checked £549 gets you a 51" Samsung Plasma or a 50" LG so they should offer you £100 more IMO

£486 for an LG 50" on Amazon. So yes, they should offer you more (the currys price).

But next time - don't buy from them! They are a rip off! :)

was it £877 for the TV ONLY?, and two years ago that would be very cheap, but yes they nearly always have wiggle room (usually 10 to 15% without authorisation from a manager/medics).

The other option you can ask for is to go into a store and pick another one, (they should give you a CaseID if you don't already have one and a contact number) and you pick/choose a 50" TV, (take in the spec sheet from the old one, and match it as close as possible) and when done the Knowhow guys should phone the number have a chat with the team and vouchers should be raised to the value within 15 to 30 minutes.

    Thanks guys

I realise that prices have come down. It was £877 just for the TV. It was an LG.

The said to me they had a TV in store for £550 (which I would have gladly accepted) but they told me I had to put £100 to it myself.

I just wanted to be sure what was acceptable before I go back to them. Thanks

I'd call them back saying its a kind first offer, but I'd like £550 (or at the very least £525 (877 / 5 / 12) x 24 on the assumption of 5 years SoGA.

If you can get them to £550 then they are going above the standard calculator and well done, if they go to £525 then great, if they do £500 thats ok, to be fair, I'd expect £500 for a 2 year old TV.

BTW if they do give you £550, think about putting some more money towards it and upgrade to FullHD with a pany (or you could also change to a 3D TV for the same price)
