HP 8500 printer not recognising cartridges

Our HP 8500 printer / scanner / fax is not recognising cartridges so won't function! Apparently this is a common problem with these printers, and we've done research on the internet about what to do and also phoned Hewlett Packard. After several phone calls we eventually got a helpful man who did give some instructions which made it work for a bit but it's stopped again!

Any ideas on fixing it? It's especially annoying as we'd just spent £50 on cartridges which we put in but it can't "see" them!

I must admit it does irritate me that products are made and sold and they then develop faults which loads of people experience but nothing is done. They should IMHO replace everyone's printers! We've not had it that long but it's out of guarantee. It was expensive too!

I looked at the HP site but it mostly says it can be a hardware fault

Do you think even if it's a hardware fault, those sites / refresh will be able to help?

I would want to know if it is hardware or the cartridges. If it is hardware, then get a new printer as repairs are usually as much.

If you are using HP Cartridges then it should not be those, if you are using compatibles it could be worth changing the brand

With refresh, they supply HP or compatibles and have a money back policy

If the previous cartridges worked, then it could be worth asking them if your cartridges are suitable for their refill by post option, if so, they should be recognised by the printer when they have been refilled

We didn't buy our cartridges at Refresh but we could try sending some old ones to be refilled.

I'm guessing it's hardware - this is someone else on another forum :
I have the exact same problem: My Officejet 8500, purchased in 11/09, decided that the Magenta cartridge was empty (it's not). I bought a brand-new one today, and now it's not accepting the full, new Magenta 940XL cartridge rom staples.
I cannot print anything, although I just print b&w.
I went through the steps in the link, and I reset the printer by unplugging and waiting for >60 secs, to no avail.

This was a great printer when I bought it, but it's almost like somebody put a time-bomb in there to turn it into a pile of junk the moment it's out of warranty - the autofeed mechanism is doing poorly as well, but I'll just be happy if I can print again!

I emailed HP when my printer said the cartridges were not genuine(which they were) and they sent me a new printer within 3 days even though it was out of warranty.

I would speak to them first, they may know if a lot of people have had to replace the printer

We have a laser printer for printing long documents but we need the fax and scanner on the HP too. Weirdly, even though the scanner doesn't need ink, it doesn't work because of the ink problem
