Inheriting a house but still claiming income support

  • Another problem could be questions from the bank where her son has an account asking about such a large sum being paid into it. Let's be honest most kids' accounts have a couple of hundred quid in them not over a hundred thousand grand.
If she was vague about the answers they will almost certainly report her as a potential money launderer and the authorities would be informed.
  • Yes, the bank will certainly want to know where the money has come from.

She's actually being very naive if she thinks no-one is going to ask any questions.

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton

When we claimed hb we had to declare all childrens accounts, and they ask for them every year too.
Also, if she has a property even if she is selling it she wont be entitled to hb either. My friend told me this, as she has her own prop, which she is selling, while she is renting and they wont pay her hb.

And why the heck should anyone expect HB when they own a house which they are choosing not to live in? That's just daft, IMHO.

Ownership of a house (even if not lived in) would affect means-tested benefits, after a period of time if legalities are involved (bereavement, divorce etc.,) and if the house is sold, then any capital over the threshold would also affect benefits.

But, there are legal ways to transfer money to children (and it may be that this lady has taken advice, and this is what she intends to do).

There are also legitimate ways to dispose of any excess on threshold, without it affecting benefits, and most solicitors would know about these options.

At the moment, she hasn't done anything wrong (and may never do), and as she has just lost someone, it would be a bit OTT to possibly cause her more stress by reporting her for what she "may" do.

The DWP couldn't do a thing officially, anyway - they can (rightly) only act on what has been done.

This is what I've got against anonymous phone lines to report people - all sorts of allegations are made, often based on hearsay and only a small and possibly inaccurate, understanding of what is actually happening.

That's without the many false allegations made, purely because of malice or envy. :(

If names and addresses had to be supplied, there would be much less inaccurate "reporting" supplied out to these departments, and perhaps the costs saved by discovering fraud would finally be more than the money wasted chasing up incorrect reports of "fraud" by members of the public.

You can tell a lot about a woman by her hands..........for instance, if they are placed around your throat, she's probably slightly upset. ;)
