You'll have a hard time, and a lot of hostility from the restaurant staff if you ever visit America. As I said above they depend on tips for a living wage. What part of "A whop bop-a-lu a whop bam boo" don't you understand?0 -
I used to know a manager at a Pizza Express, her and the chef split the card tips, and waiting staff got the cash tips. This was a few years ago now though, before minimum wage, so things may have changed. When I had my loft converted back into a loft, the neighbours came around and scoffed, and called me retro.0

How would that happen?
The waiters dont know if you are going to tip or not?
I have visted America a few times and sometimes I tip and other times I dont.
Depends whether they get on my nerves with the "Hi, I'm BobbyJo and I will be your waitress for the evening" routine.0 -
There are a couple of restaurants that make it compulsory to tip if paying by card. I once had dinner at Garfunkel's and the waiter passed us the card machine. It asked for the amount of grat we wanted to pay..no "cancel" or "no" button. I found this very rude! If I get a bad waiter, I won't tip, same if they're taking ages to seat me, ages to bring drinks etc. The most I ever tip is £2 aswell. I don't have money to chuck away!0

I once worked in a pub owned by one of the larger breweries - if someone offered to buy us a drink, we were instructed to enter a specific drink (not the most expensive, but certainly not the cheapest) and charge the customer. The money went in the till and none of the bar staff ever saw it again!! I ahted the practise and would tell people that we wouldn't actually get the drink, so I would rather not accept it as they would just be lining the beweries pockets for nothing!!
They also used to dock wages for money missing in tills - I left when they tried to do it to me using the print-out for a till which had been in use all day by several different people which was £30 down when they checked it - half an hour into my shift!! The docking would have meant that I actualyl owed the pub money at the end fo the night, so I quit there and then and spent the evening drinking illicit freebies from my mates behind the bar...0
