    She will really need to go to see a solicitor, as if she owns the property as "tenants in common", or "joint tenants" there is a significant legal difference in what she can and cannot do. (i think those are the phrases)

    Most solicitors will give the first half hour free ....

    Hi, your relative would not have to tell the council housing dept anything. She is legally entitled to continue to rent her current house and it would have no effect on her living there. However, if she is in receipt of Housing Benefit or Council Tax Benefit she may have to inform them of a change of circumstances.

    if the other owner does not live there either, why not put it in the hands of a letting agent and get some rent in ?
  • This is covered under the "two homes rule".

    So long as she continues to use her current property as her "sole or principle residence" she can maintain her tenancy without any problems.

    It is most likely covered under the tenancy agreement somewhere.
