Removal costs?

Hi all,
A hopefully quick question for all you savvy savers out there - what's the approximate cost of hiring a removals company?
Hubby and I are moving from our large-ish 2-bed terrace in Hertfordshire to a similarly sized 3-bed terrace in Kent, at a distance of about 75 miles. Our house isn't overstuffed with furniture, but we will be moving 2 double beds, 3-piece suite, white goods, etc etc.
We have had one company quote for us, and they'ce come to £690 plus VAT, making it close to £900.
Is this about right? I'd really appreciate any advice you can offer.
Thanks,
Sarah

Hi -
I always call the local storage companies and ask if they can recommend any of the removalists that use their services.
The main thing is to ring around early and get lots of quotes. Let every company know that you will be speaking to other companies and you need a competitive quote.
Know the access & level of each move. Know parking. Know approx. level of insurance you'll need if any. Know dates.
Also, are you going to pack yourself? Some removalists will lend you boxes, as long as you return them in a reusable condition within a specified timeframe after the move - only useful if you can get them back easily. Some will include free boxes in their quote - not useful if the quote isn't competitive. Always take the option of using their hanging frames for clothes. It is much easier. Know the bits you will pack & bits you only want protected. Ask for advice for items you aren't sure about.
I got 7 quotes the last time we moved. (3 bed house) The difference between the top and bottom quotes was nearly 1000 pounds! Only 3 quotes were similar, however, the co we went with included some free boxes and tape in the price and they were 5 pounds cheaper.0 -
always (and i mean ALWAYS) make sure any removal company is covered for in transit goods insurance. if anything breaks you will then be covered.
as for costs, these can vary considerably according to time of day, week day etc. try to go for a mid week move as this is when most removal firms are quietest. fridays, saturdays are a no no.
as previously posted local storage companies have very good and reliable contacts so try them too.Never put off till tomorrow what you can do today!
Cos if you do it today and like it...You can do it again tomorrow..

For me the most important thing was reputation, we moved from a 1 bed flat to a 3 bed house and it was around £300 just for moving our stuff. They are a family company that have been around forever and have a great reputation and they were faultless.0

We just moved from a large 3 bed detached house with 3 kids and all that stuff to a 4 bed detached and we paid just under £600 including vat and insurance.
We had 4 other quotes between £900 to £1400 and this was by far the cheapest and they gave you free boxes too.
My advice is shop around!!!!0 -
my parents are moving from a 3 bed to a 2 bed distance about 70 mines and have been quoted £600 including packing and VAT0

Just (today!) has the last of three quotes to move contents of four bed house 220 miles. On the basis that we do all the packing (preferred) they came in at £1200, £1350 and £1400. The insurance was around about the £200 mark extra. The insurance doesnt cover self packed items though - so I spoke to my contents insurer, they said as long as the removal company was registered with B.A.R (the trade body) my contents would be covered on my household policy in transit. So the insurance doesnt seem necessary (I'd appreciate any comments from anyone who might have spotted any problems with that statement) Other problem is that cheapest quote requires a £100 deposit is to cover packing boxes - which have to be returned within 10 days - given the distance I cant spend a day driving back with a load of boxes, so buying off internet, but adds to the lowest quote - still the cheapest and local (plus the guy who came round was very helpful!) proof will be in the pudding - but getting several quotes seems to be the answer - and check whether your contents insurance covers the move!0

Who are the cheapest international removalists?
In this situation, to OZ, in a container?
As cheap and as slow as POSSIBLE!
thanks,

Where are you moving from and to in OZ ?
I work in the industry and may be able to give you some guidance.
The more you do the less you pay, if you can do much of the packing yourselves, you will save ALOT of money, if you can help with the loading then again you will SAVE. For Australia, you will need to use new or clean cartons and materials due to their strict quarantine laws, make a inventory for every box as you go and name and number every piece. In Oz all containers have to de-vanned for customs inspection and then the contents are usually re-packed into a furniture removal type lorry for onward delivery to your door. Therefore the packing needs to be a good standard. If you need anymore PM me.0 -
My nan moved just before Christmas from London to Sussex (distance about 75 miles). She decided to go with a sussex based removal company as they were far cheaper than what she had been qouted in London.
I think it was around the £400 mark. She moved from a large 3 bed house to a 2 bed bungalow!
Try and get a quote from a local firm in the area you are moving to.
Hth.

We just moved from a 3 bed flat in London to a 3 bed house in Surrey with 2 kids and all that stuff and we paid only £570 including vat and insurance using Handy Moves.
We had 2 other quotes between £700 and £1200. My advice - shop around few weeks before the move !!0
