Tax return

I am in the middle of filing my husbands tax return 2010-2011.
Page 1 asks if he has been an employee, director etc
Hubby was made redundant 9/04/10...employee
Hubby started his own business (soletrader) 31/03/2011....director

So I answer "yes"
All is fine until I reach "Accounting details" here I am asked " dates your books/accounts are made up to" HMRC told me to put in 05/04/12
Next question is about income for the business, the helpline advises me not to fill in these boxes as the business had only been up for a matter of days and there was no income just outgoings, ok still fine so far.
Next page is about Capital Allowance and Balancing Charges for the busines
Now my hubby had purchased some machines prior to registering the business (he had work ready to start in April so needed to be ready with machinery), ie in early March he purchased a sprayer, hedge trimmers etc to the value of around £800
Am I right in thinking that this figure goes into the AIA box on this occasion

Its unfornunate that he started his buiness on 31/03/11. If he had waited 6 days there would be no need to mention his self-employment as it would not have been in 2010-2011 tax year.
  • It is unfortunate about the dates. Hubby had been unemployed for almost 12mth, we were not entitled to any benefits so decided that he should start the business. Having taken advice we were told that if we could be registered by the end of March we could claim a small business start up benefit, so thats how we ended up registering on that date. Its not a big deal, just that quetion sort of confused me a little. I just want to make sure I am filling the forms in correctly.

    Thanks for any help given
  • Your best bet is to ring IR and ask them IMO....I've yet to do my books, and it's the 1st time round for me as well...should be interesting :o

You cannot be a sole trader and a director in respect of the same business, he is either one or the other.
