should i be paid for this?

i was asked by my boss to pick up a work colleegue every day because it was becoming difficult to organize lifts for the non-drivers ( we have 2 people employed who drive non-drivers to and from calls, this is their job this is what they get paid for)
i said no at first because it ment me going out of my way, then i was told i would be paid, that as soon as they got in my car the clock was ticking, i should mark the time on my rota every day and they would let finance know.
today finance manager called asking why i had put down the hrs for picking this person up, and that i would only get paid the millage!! and i must have got my wires crossed!!
where do i stand with this should i be paid?

    That depends...
How much extra time do you spend on road by driving this person? If none or little then mileage is a good deal.
If we are going into half an hour/hours, then I would say "no" again.
Do you have anything in writing that it is the time you get paid? Maybe the finance person got her wires crossed, as no one told her this is what the agreement was... ?
  • Explain what you were told. Tell them that you went out of your way on the understanding you would be compensated for your time. If that isn't the case then let them pay for your mileage up to that point and inform them that you won't be picking the person up anymore.

There is no reason why you should transport other staff to work unless you so choose. Obviously if they are willing to pay you (at whatever rate be that just mileage or for your time as well) then that is simply a matter for negotiation between you and the firm.

Regardless of your firms attitude check you car insurance position on this carefully.

If it becomes part of your paid job to drive other members of staff around this is a very different situation to simply driving to your main place of work.

i feel like they have lied to me to get me to do something i didnt want to do in the first place. sooo anoying
they said if i wont pick her up they will pull me off the run that i am doing which i dont want so i guess ill just have to put up with it.

£20 a week is not bad at all in my book, if youre not paying tax on it I really think your onto a good thing, times it by 52 (weeks in a year)

Mind, I would hate to be put in the position where i was committed to do this. I liked going to work my way, there were 4 ways of me going to work, I varied it, because that's what I liked, different route every day. same mileage, same time, different views every day.
Me, My Journey, My Way, I thinks it probably because I hate to be controlled.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.
  • 9 minutes is what 6 miles so at 45p a mile you are getting £2.70 each way to do the lift.

Less than 6 miles if it's local traffic; could be as low as 2 miles in rush hour.

OP, nobody can give you any accurate advice until you clarify your post.

What are your hours of work? Is it your car? How is your pay worked out? ie monthly with a fuel allowance?

Put some meat on the bone. All the above posts are quite useless at this point-nobody can know anything of your job from what you have posted thus far.

How on earth do you know the above from what the OP has initially posted?

Were you a party to the employment of blueye?

A standard employment contract will often have a clause along the lines of 'an employee will undertake any task within their capability if so required.'

We need to know much more before making rash statements like you have (and often do).

Blueye is a community care worker. Missing a half hour call in the morning may equate to a loss of £20-£30 weekly. So it's not really paying her to pick up her colleague. Assume colleague is the 2nd carer for double-up calls therefore Blueye will lose this run if she is not able to transport as a driver will be needed.

I'd be inclined to tell them 'so be it' and see what run they give you as an alternative. You may be better off with it.
