endsleigh insurance excess

My son recently damaged his laptop which is from Dell and cost £650 about 18 months ago.

He has claimed through his student policy with endsleigh and they have said they will replace it with a similar model (his model has now been discontinued.)

The spec of the new machine is fine.

However, the excess on the policy is 10%. They are charging about £78 which must be 10% of what they say it costs to replace the laptop.

If that is so, I can buy the same spec laptop on the Dell website for more like £700, and that has 1GB ram unlike the 512 MB ram they are giving as a like for like replacement (on the website you can't even order this particular machine with only 512MB ram.

Anyway, my real query is, should my excess not be for 10% of my claim ie on £650? If it is 10% of what it costs to replace the item, then do I have any errand pointing out that the price they say it costs is too high?

From my experience with the Dell site there might be a hidden cost you are not seeing. I am thinking in terms of warranty (on site service perhaps) and the type of operating system. The new Vista OS has many purchase options.

On a typical Dell order there are around 20 drop down boxes where you can change details and end up with a different price.

The Endsleigh student policy is new for old so the 10% excess would apply on the replacement cost, not the price you paid. The odd thing is though, prices for laptops have fallen in the last 18 months.
