Broken laptop

I bought a Sony VAIO VGN/Z820G in the US in December 2009.

It's an ultralight 13.3" laptop with a 1600x900 screen 4GB of RAM, Win7 64 and Core 2 Duo P8700 2.53GHz.

I had it repaired under warranty in March 2010 and also in November 2010. In February 2011 I had it repaired out-of-warranty due to a broken screen for €300.

It broke again recently (screen not working) and they told me that it was an 'Nvidia issue' and they would repair it as a 'known issue', but if it wasn't they would charge me a diagnostic fee to return.

They have since returned with a quote for €610 to replace screen and motherboard and said if I want it back unrepaired they will charge me €160.

Any thoughts how to proceed???

Pay them or tell them to keep it. You bought it outside of the UK/EU so you have no protection under UK or EU consumer laws. And from what I read on the US amateur radio forums, if you're lucky you get a years manufacturers warranty with some things you buy but there are no laws even remotely like ours in regards to SOGA, fit for purpose.

I'm tempted to let them keep it.

It will break again so I'm best rid.

If I flog it on ebay repaired I will struggle to get €600 for it.

If I sell it as broken (it still works), I will struggle to get €160 for it.

Sadly if it is the nVidia chipset that nVidia acknowledged had a manufacturing fault then it will go again.

Not really sure what the problem is, I had a Sony SZ before this, also thin and light and it was a great laptop but very fragile and I had repaired a number of times, I think this is no different. Don't think it's going to be worth my while to try and fleabay it.
