Hi!
I recently sold a television on eBay, it was actually originally on Gumtree as ‘buyer collects’ but the man who wanted to buy it wanted the item couriered to him in a hurry and I suggested eBay as it offers better protection for both of us. I put it up as a generic sale in case he backed out, I still might get a sale so We agreed on a price and he bought the item. I checked the item, packaged it carefully and the courier picked it up the next morning. All though these stages we were talking via text arranging everything, This was on the 8th of September.
A few days, maybe a week later he text me saying that there was a problem with the DVD player on the TV, I checked that he wasn’t using pirated discs or ones that were damaged in any way as the format may not be supported and concluded that I had no idea as to why it was not working, as it did when I sent it to him.
He also said that the remote was not working, on the chance that I sent the wrong one I was happy to send another one that could be it (they were both the same brand- Technika)
I heard nothing more from him so assumed he had got it working and perhaps faulty batteries were the cause of the problem.
At no point has the seller text/called me to say he wanted a refund so I hadn’t even logged into my eBay account as I had no reason to! I wasn’t buying/selling anything else.
I got an email regarding this dispute last night saying that he wants a full refund however it has been over a month since the sale and he has written in his additional information that he “opened the TV up and cleaned the optical lens”, which is ridiculous!
If the TV was as it was sold, I would accept the refund but he has opened it up and prodded around possibly causing the damage he is complaining about.
In any shop, second hand or new; if an electrical item has been opened up and attempted to be fixed by the buyer they cannot return it. As I said the TV worked perfectly when is sent it to him and now he has tampered with it, its suddenly broken.
is he likely to be granted the refund?
i sold the TV to make my rent so have no money to give him back!!
please help me!

Also put it in your response in the case.S.P.C member 1662 - target £3000 -
Hi
We have a board dedicated to ebay, with buyers and sellers as regular posters, so I'll move your query across so that they can help you with what processes you may need to follow.

I'd imagine that the buyer opening and 'fiddling' with any electrical appliance would make a refund claim difficult.
Usually there's stickers on items that state 'must only be opened by approved technicians' type of thing which i gather he's not?!
Also my interpretation of paypal is that the item must be returned as sent, clearly he's indicated that he's had a DIY attempt at repairs.
I'd make sure you only contact via ebay/paypal and keep records of communications sent/received to show to paypal if needed.
Hope this helps!0 -

As per the above post.
Nutti I know you are new, but don't keep copying and pasting your question. I thought I had read this and was typing the reply as per Jen.....only to find he/she had already done it here.0 -
I'd call eBay/PayPal and explain the problem (depending on who the dispute was opened with)
The PayPal telephone number is 0844 496 0300
The eBay telephone number is 0844 496 03010 -
