Damp Smell in Conservatory

Ive had the Conservatory about 7 years with no problems but over last winter and now that Autumn has well and truely kicked in its developed a Damp smell....i can even tell when someone has opened the door to go in. There is no visible signs of damp....ive checked outside and even though im not 100% where the dampcourse is i cant see anything obvious. So im at a bit of a loss as to whats happening. Could it be condensation?? though ive not noticed it on the windows. The conservatory isnt heated as such though we have a oil heater when needed.
Im loathed to call a specialist company (after watching Watchdog) they will look to find something even if its not there.
Ive recently brought a Dehumidifier which has improved things but does a Dehumidifier just relieve the symptoms instead of tackling the source?

In reality, there's not a lot you can do, we have the same problem with our conservatory, we run the dehumidifier almost throughout the winter, as the first winter all the blinds, lamp shades, furniture etc. got a bit mouldy. The choice is either heat the space and let it all go out through the roof, or put your dehumidifier on a timer and empty it regularly.
With regards to the smell, once you've cleaned everything and happy that you dehumidifier is ok, if you still have a smell then hire a small air scrubber, it'll kill the smell, as long as you've cured the cause.
Thanks Jonathon
The smell has noticably reduced with the Dehumidifier...im just concerned because upto last year it was fine. Though im not too worried about the running cost of it as its showing around 2.5 p an hout on my energy monitor. Ill look into the Air scrubber thanks0 -
Ours is similar age - not damp but unused smell last year and this.
Luckily it soon goes when it is opened up and used.
Like you we only heat it if it going to be used -special occasions only in deep Winter;)
Mentioned your post to SWMBO who said she used to often put the heating on:eek: - before going back to work full time."If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... Being uneducated, you have no fear of the future.".....
