Tax Credit overpayment.

Hi all,

Just one thing after another!

My partner recieved a letter yesterday to say he's been overpaid Tax Credit by £369. It says we can split this payment over 12 months which would suit us better, only thing is we can't afford to start these payments untill January when our repayments for Council Tax Arrears finishes.

Like I said one thing after another, we thought in Jnauary we would be £50 a month up after finishing CT repayments haha.

Anyways, what should I do? Contact them with payment details but ask nicely for the first DD not to be taken untill January? How nice will they be about that?

Any help is appreciated.
Thank you!
Sx

when is this overpayment from? the only reason i ask is my partner got the same thing, for the same amount, but it dates back a few years from when she made a single claim

Shes going to call and challenge it, as it seems strange that we have made joint claims and things since, and its never been mentioned

It says its from 2010, to be honest he never kept any paperwork, i was staying with him sometimes and not others and thought they might have got wind of that. We weren't going to challenge it but maybe its worthwhile. There is no breakdown of the overpayment, just a letter with a Giro bit at the bottom to pay.
    Thanks

I would ask the Tax credit people to explain exactly how and why you have been overpaid. Don't pay it until you are sure of the amount. I have received these letters each year for many years. Each year it was different , some £40 some £400 then back to about £40. No one could explain the amounts. Eventually last year the statement said we didn't owe anything. The tax credit system seems a bit of a shambles. I would say only pay it if you are convinced it is correct.

Ok thank you for your help, I will get my partner to call this evening, I assume they will only speak to him since it is in his name.

He was on a single claim then stopped when we got a house together August 2010. We weren't entitled to anything anymore so that was the last we heard of it. Hopefully its just a misunderstanding.

    Thanks again.
  • we have had a letter about ctc, that is down to the fact they didn't update their systems with in 30 days of us notifying them of a change. As my partner went from claiming as a single parent to us having a joint claim with my wtc.
