Copd ?

Guidance needed please ..........
Would COPD and Emphysemia problems be enough to apply for DLA ?
o/h now needs to use either a Motability scooter or a wheelchair ( pushed by me ) to get around outdoors , has had to quit work because of the walking distances involved being beyond her capabilities !
Looked at a form for applying but looks like gobbldegook to us !
Any thoughts or guidance welcome !

    hello,

what I will say is its always worth a try. dla has a mobility compnent to it so if your partner can only manage to walk less than a certain distance then they may be entitled to it. The form can be a little challenging so I would suggest you contact Citixens Advice Bureau who can help you fill it out and also let you know if there are other benefits you may be entitles to. It may also be worth contacting your Occupational Therapist at your local seocial services department. They can do a home assessment and can provide equipment to help with all aspects of personal care if your partner is struggling.

    Good luck.

Walk less than a certain distance 'without severe pain or discomfort'.
If walking a few yards brings on severe discomfort or pain, then even if you can walk over the thresholds, any distance you can walk with severe pain or discomfort is supposed to be ignored.
  • yes if he's under 65 mum just been diagnosed summer OT told her app for AA as she over. She on home 02 and just organised portable for her. try and get support statement from OT or who knows him
  • Sounds like it.

Anything she does that she needs help with, like getting dressed, sorting out the oxygen/meds/inhalers, cooking, helping her eat - anything - that is affected by it makes it worth claiming.

    I agree absolutely.

The DWP when looking at a DLA claim from will NOT just accept your word for it. They will need solid, medical, professional proof of the distance they can actually walk before severe discomfort arises. They will be looking for the distance that you can walk, how you walk and how long it takes to walk that distance.

Due to one of my conditions being vascular, I am having to undergo a 'walking' test at the hospital on a machine. I will be wired up and oxygen fed to me.
The purpose of this is to establish how far I can walk, at which point severe discomfort sets in and where the pain is coming from. They will also be checking blood pressure.

I am having to go through this to prove my case.

When I have those readings and the report it will prove my inability to walk very far.

It depends on how it affects him really. It's not the disability that really matters, just the care needs a person has because of their disability. My boyfriend has COPD but doesn't qualify at the moment as he has it really well managed, and it's still quite resent (diagnosed around 2 years ago). As things get worse in the future he probably will end up qualifying though.

If you think his care/mobility needs are enough, then fill out a claim form with as much detail and honesty as you can, the worst they can do is say no.
