Tesco Clubcard Credit Card - Beware!

We opened a Tesco Clubcard credit card a couple of weeks ago, intending to use it for all transactions. Twice in the last 3 days the card has been declined at the checkouts in Tesco. On both occasions I had to ring their customer service helpline, to be told that I had exceeded the daily limit of transactions. The first time it happened, they "reset" my account. Today, they refused to do so, claiming that all customers have a daily limit of 10 transactions (regardless of value) and this cannot be raised or overridden.

I've never had this from any other card provider. what's the point in having a card that you can't use for daily household expenses?? Today's 10 transactions came to just over £200 - all in different grocery stores - so it's hardly a security issue & potential card fraud in Poundstretcher & the like.

This policy renders the card totally unfit for purpose

It really is irritating. Unfortunately most card providers have roughly the same limits attached to their cards, so you'll struggle to find a card which has an "unlimited uses per day" feature to it (do tell me if you find one, I'd also like one!).
  • I recall this came up once before and I think the upshot was that Tesco's limit is lower than some other cards (willing to stand corrected).

I wouldn't say it's "totally unfit for purpose".... afterall you can still get (it seems) 10 purchases a day with it.

I worked for a card provider at one stage, and the limit on that was 8 transactions a day. A further two could be forced through by customer service staff (although was a lot of grief for all concerned), and after that, there were no further transactions allowed on that card until midnight.

You can imaging the fun and games in that call centre at Christmas time...
