iPod Touch - Hidden Costs?

Hi
I want to buy my wife an iPod Touch but wanted to check if there are any hidden costs, or contract involved - does anyone know?
I always thought iPods were standalone but seeing as they now do things like Facetime and downloadable apps I am assume some kind of data requirement is required. If not how does it work if you want to download and use apps such as, say, Facebook?
Appreciate any advice

iPod Touch dont need any 'carrier' or contracts.
There are no hidden costs with them.
To accces online apps you will need access to Wifi, like at home or at the pub.Tech Savvy Student trying to help and learn

There are no hidden costs. It is a great toy allowing you to play games, listen to music and watch videos. With iOS 5 you can also send messages to other iTouch, iPad or iPhone users if you are connected to a wireless point. You can even make calls with Skype...0

As others have said, there are no hidden costs, you can of coarse buy music and apps but no-one is forcing you to, you can import any existing music you may have in to itunes ie from CD or from your hard drive.I hate football and do wish people wouldn't keep talking about it like it's the most important thing in the world0
