Car insurance help needed

Hi,
I was wondering if anyone could help me. I've been driving for 7 years now and have 7 years unprotected NCD. I'm due for renewal in November and the quotes I've been getting are astronomical. When I first passed my test as a 21 year old my insurance was £1100 on an 8 year old ford ka. The lowest quote/ renewal I ever had was two years ago on a 56 plate ford fiesta for £380. I'm now driving a 54 plate Renault Clio (worth £2000 approx) and the cheapest quote I have had so far is £700!
I'm a 28 year old female driver- no accidents, no points on license, car kept in secure car park day and night, approx 6000 miles driven per year. I live in Liverpool but there are women I know who live in worse areas of the city with one year of driving experience who renewed for £800 a month ago.
So my query is this- what am I doing wrong? I've tried the car insurance article tips and the best it can do is the £700 quote which is a £150 rise on last year's renewal. I feel like I'm being extorted!
Thanks for reading this, and hopefully some more tips!

The best way is to use all the listed comparison sites in the order that Martin's site suggests.
Consider going through a cashback site with the best quote to look at the possibility of cashback on the deal as well.
To reduce premiums look at having a higher excess. Weed out unnecessary policy add ons - do you need to pay extra for hire cars, legal cover etc.
Unfortunately until you hit 30(ish) you're classed as a higher risk and premiums across the board have increased for everyone due to the impact of the recession and the cash for crash culture that is becoming more and more prevelent.
Good luck , but expect to pay more.0
