  • Thanks for all your replies, it really helps to have other peoples opinion to see if you yourself are being unreasonable.

In this case I don't think I am but at the moment there doesn't seem to be a great deal I can do about it!
    The World come on.....
  • Just start your own buisness and stuff it full of your family and friends! if you cant beat em join em!
It makes me laugh about equal opportunities policies, they are not adhered to regarding recruitment and selection in my experience!

It's fair to say nepotism is common but more likely to be found in smaller family run business.
I employ relatives and neighbours in what has become more like a community rather than family run business and given the chance who wouldn't do their relatives a favour.
That said however, if they weren't suitable they wouldn't get a chance and to be honest those family employees get it worse to avoid anything that even hints of nepotism.
Family is one thing but business is business and they line is clearly marked.
    But that's just me.
  • Where I work (around 25 people at the mo), whenever a vacancy arises an e-mail gets sent round with the job description asking if we have any family and friends who are interested before it gets advertised externally...

Its difficult to argue that nepotism isn't alive and well. My workplace is also stuffed full of people (obviously excluding me) that are in positions far above their ability & competence. The old phrase "promoted out of trouble" comes to mind.

    That's not what nepotism means

Wherever I've worked, there have been clear cases of family members following the same fields/employers. Sometimes they're able to do the job and in other cases it's a case of shrugging your shoulders and "Well, he's so-and-so's brother in law, worraya gonna do?".

In any large organisation there is often an attitude of "well if it works, leave it alone" - as long as there aren't too many complaints and the work gets done who cares?

It's a sickener, when you see a job you desperately wanted, being done badly and you know you could do it standing on your head and blindfold but so-and-so's teenage daughter of a friend, or their [STRIKE]mouthbreather[/STRIKE] f!ckwitted cousin is screwing it up right there in front of you and you can't say anything because so-and-so has the ear of your boss or some other arrangement.

    Don't get me started...........
 Don't know what I'm doing, but doing it anyway...

What's with the mouthbreather bit? I have allergy problems and tend to mouthbreath. I guess I'm not worth employing. Lucky that my current employer didn't know about my blocked up nose problem then.

I don't think he was copying / pasting from a dictionary.
