Bet you've spent ages hunting round for hard-to-find houses in the middle of nowhere though. Finding and frequently referring to a map takes longer and is more distracting than having a sat nav lead the way. Try one and you'll probably change your mind.

Got to admit, i do have a good sense of direction and map reading skills, but trying to get somewhere slightly complicated and the sat nav comes into it's own. even if i know where im going, i sometimes have mine on during a long journey, most useful time was on my way back from Leeds with work, big accident on M1, i was about 2 miles behind it by a junction according to radio traffic alerts, told the tomtom to avoid the road block and it took me off at the junction, through some random lanes, and back onto the M1 (which was clear for all the traffic stuck behind the accident) and on my way home. Maybe a 20 minute diversion? my colleague had left our leeds office not long after me and stayed on the M1 and was stuck for a few hours...

I drove for years without the use of a sat nav, didnt go far in first 5/6 years of driving but i used google to find where i had to go (before i knew of google earth) and print off directions. Sat navs are ok until you come to new housing estates and the sat nav wants to take you through some bollards. Id learn to read maps as what would you do if the sat nav decided to not work or just die on you when your driving.

But you map is likely to be as out of date as your sat nav.
Most now do quarterly map upgrades so not that far out
