Does your bank account support direct debit? If so, I don't see why not.

What about if the card doesnt have a Security Number (3digits) on the back? would that matter?

on that link though it does say about "pay out" pay bills directly from the account..

Yes, the account accepts Direct Debits (which is for all the utility suppliers the preferred method of payment).
Just apply to the telephone company of your choice.

Should you get rejected, it won't be a problem with your account. It would be based on your credit history
(either no credit history or a bad one). If that happens, come back here again. Do not apply to lots and lots
of companies, as too many applications will bring your credit rating down.

Ah I think I see the issue. A lot of phone companies charge a debit card £1 to prove your identity.. that could be a problem. You might need to go to the shop of the company you choose and speak to them about it, or failing that you might need to look at another account. I have a basic Cash Card account with Barclays and got my Galaxy S2 with that (I have a debit card with that though) and my Tesco SIM only I got with my Halifax EasyCash basic account so it is possible.

You could possibly get one through a mobile store, eg carphone warehouse. Chip and pin cards make applying for a phone contact much easier, avoiding the need for loads of ID.

I forgot that Santander don't offer a debit card with this account. I shouldn't have assumed Santander could offer any basic banking facilities.

I'd prioritise getting a basic account with a real bank.
  • thanks for all replys..

suppose ill find out tommorow when i got to a 3 or vodafone store to get a contract out

jsutherland7, the problem you may have is that you have a cash card only, not a debit card. Hence the lack of a number on the reverse. Almost every other bank offers a debit card with these accounts,.

yup - its a Visa Debit card. Says Visa Debit on the front of it and has a hologram on the back and three digit code. I use it to pay for virtually everything.
