HW ok, HW CH ok, but not heating on its own??

Hi wondered if anyone could help. The hot water and heating work together but when you want heating only the boiler fires then shuts off. Any thoughts?

Could be that the diverter valve is stuck, if that's the case then it's quick and not too expensive to have that replaced
(well that was the case anyway when mine got stuck, but that was quite a few years ago!) Now free from the incompetence of vodafail0 -
On my boiler, you can't have CH only, you must have HW as well, but HW alone is ok."You were only supposed to blow the bl**dy doors off!!"0

Odd one this. If HW & CH work when both options are selected (guess you are 100% sure are both working!) sounds like the boiler, room and HW tank stats plus the motorised valve are working normally.
If CH only is selected and causes the boiler to fire up (room stat 'calling' for heat) then shuts down immediately, might be a programmer issue. Was the CH only working before and now it's not? Had any work done e.g. boiler service lately?0 -
Thanks for your responses, the heating has been off all summer but hot water used everyday. As soon as the water comes on the lever moves back to just HW...0

yes, this was also the case at my parents' house0 -
What sort of system have you got? Do you have a HW tank (open vented or sealed system?) or do you have a combi boiler?

Its an open system.0

Thanks. The divertor valve must be a suspect but perhaps its just the actuator rather than the valve itself. Or perhaps its a loose connection in the wiring centre. Its an open system.
BTW Some programmers have a mechanical interlock on the switch which prevents you running CH alone. Is your like that?
