Tax Credit Overpayment Notification

Hi guys, am hoping that someone in the know can give me a heads up as to what to do...

Just opened a letter from HMRC stating that I was overpaid £277 up to 10th April but no explanation as to why.

There's no way that I can pay this in full, but can obviously arrange the offered 'spread it over 12 months' option.

But should I ask for a full explanation before paying?

Is HMRC notorious in sending out wrong overpayment requests, and could I get it written off?

It seems rather strange that myself and my husband have given all of the correct info to them when requested, but they ended up giving us £5-odd too much each week.

I just don't see how they can renege on an agreed amount 18 months after it started being paid!

Has their been any other money coming in, overtime worked etc etc. Did you estimate and amount that is different from the amount shown on P60 etc?

That's the only thing I can think of that would make payments different from what they are.

Oops...just re-read the letter and it's an over-payment for the period ending April of last year.

I was the only one working at the time - my husband was a full time student and not working.

My wages weren't approximate as I worked set hours and so knew to a penny what my year's wage would be.

The only thing that happened during '08-09 was that my husband moved in with me and my claim became a joint claim.

At the time my payments were reduced - which to this day I still cannot understand considering that there was one more adult to provide for, and he hadn't worked during the claim period.

Dunno but the same kinda thing happened to me, was something to do with the allowances granted or something like that. Unfortunately it does need paying back, even if it's at a reduced rate over the year. I objected to one lot of overpayment. It was made into my bank account whilst I was still with my x, but they came at me for the full overpayment. Told them I was quite happy to pay half as it was a joint claim, and they could go after my x for the other half, they happily agreed to this. Quite rightly too, but best to get them to put it in writing, hopefully someone with more knowhow might better advise u.

Oh well, I rang them yesterday and got through after nearly half hour.

It was the changeover period from single to joint claim...they made 2 payments at the single amount instead of the adjusted amount.

Will get on the payment dept later today to organise monthly payments.

You may not need to, AFAIR they take it from future payments made to you. But might be wise to give them a call anyhoo, it's been a couple of years since I got rid of the x ;)
