New line upstairs - Messy?

Hi
We're moving in to a new house (new to us not a new build) shortly and before we move in we've asked BT to reconnect the property to provide our phone and broadband services. We also want Sky TV and to have multi room in one room upstairs. For this we need a telephone socket upstairs.
My question is, how much mess does it make having a phone socket put in?
Also, when my wife rang BT they said that they would be able to put the new socket in because we're a reconnection but they didn't mention a charge. My wife is under the impression this would be free after speaking to BT?
Thanks
Craig

if you are moving into a new property and want sky multi room then when you arrange for sky to fit the dish and set top boxes, sky should also provide the extension socket for the second (multi room ) box....if BT are providing a new line or starting up an existing line, they wont provide an extension unless you ask them to, and it would be chargable....also, if the line already exists and just needs to be started or reconnected in the exchange you may not even see the BT/Openreach engineer as they wont visit unless neccesary, and if the current occupant has a working line then a visit shouldnt really be needed0

It's part of the Sky installers job to run a phone line from the nearest phone point to the multi room box,he'll tell you you don't need it so he can get away quicker.
It's usually a plug in phone jack & the cabling is stapled to the skirting board to the multi room box & a female phone end is fitted.0 -
So if you want a neat job doing, just get any handy-person to run the extension for you-or DIY,, it's s simple job.
BT will charge you around £130 for an extension (minimum call out charge).
As iniltous says, your attendance is required on the day in case access is required by OR, but the odds are that you will not see them-the reconnection is done at the exchange or cabinet. No free lunch, and no free laptop0
