Advice on possible missold house insurance

Hi
My friend asked me if I can sort out her sisters buildings and contents insurance.
She has had a policy with barclays for a few years and her monthly direct debit to them was £117.45  Have used Moneysupermarket and got equivalent cover for just over £12 a month.
On looking at whats covered on her renewal form, there is all sorts she never asked for ie: £50,000 contents, she lives in a little terrace house in Liverpool! Garage contents, she hasn't got a garage! money in the home, employers liability, contents in other outbuildings.
Not a sob story, but this lady has been under a lot of stress over the last few years, loss of hubby and death of two daughters, adopting grandchildren and on top of that looking after her own mum with severe dementia.
Is there anything we can do about her being missold the past insurance or will it be a case of 'she should have read the fine print' ?
She was initially sold this policy over the phone, and she answered questions about her home then.
Thanks for any advice.

Unfortunately it's not a miss sold policy it's a miss bought policy, they have sold her their standard off the shelf policy that has lots of built in covers whether you need them or not.
The fact she is paying over the odds for it is not the banks fault so she will not be able to claim miss selling.
Get her onto a decent cheaper policy (Don't just buy the cheapest, check the cover and service of the insurer) and transfer her to a new Insurer, bear in mind that she needs to also monitor the new companies renewal as it may also shoot up in premium.

£117.45 per month sounds very expensive, but if the insurance offered over the phone did not hide the cost or the level of cover, then I cannot see where anyone could argue that it was missold.
I will not comment about the background info you included because it has little to do with the case. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
i agree, i dont think it was mis sold. And £50,000 probably isnt over insuring anyway. Its just that she has probably taken out the best cover possible whereas she may prefer a more run of the mill policy. Id be surprised if the cover is identical, there are all sorts of little things that may not be included (ie the one the direct line are promoting at the minute, if you have a burst pipe some companies will only pay to have the pipe repaired and not the damage done getting to the pipe).
You imagine her house burnt down, your not just having to buy a TV and couch.
You have carpets, wallpaper, lights, a new kitchen, bathroom, beds, cutlery, utensils, curtains, clothes, jewellery etc etc.I am a Mortgage AdviserYou should note that this site doesn't check my status as a mortgage adviser, so you need to take my word for it. nothing from what you're put suggests a mis-sale. The majority of those things are standard on any home cover policy.0
