Finding a STRUCTURAL SURVEYOR? - What Questions to ask ??

We have some cracks on our house, which are out on the conserventry, and outside the walls, and also many internal.
we have been told it must probably is due to Near trees which are huge.
The building is cracking with these cracks, and want to search yello pages for a structural engineer.
As I will search for many, and Ask them things when I phone them..
What questions should I ask them?
1) how much do you charge/ your quote for a structural survey ?
2) when can you come out,and survey the property?
3) how long do you take to do the report...
4) Question ? - what can i ask ?
5) Question ? - what can i ask ?
6) Question ? - what can i ask ?
7) Question ? - what can i ask ?
8) Question ? - what can i ask ?
What other questions can i ask? ... while searching for a structural surveyor ?
and also do they come out for free? or have a call out charge? (without giving a survey report, that is)... just come and see?
and Also, should our Building Insurance (which we have) be sending out the Structural surveyor? (- if we contact them that is... with this issue? )
If so, do we have to write a letter to them with photos of the cracks? - what type of draft should the letter be? - are there any sites online which show draft letters ?

I would contact your building insurers. They should arrange for the problem to be surveyed and all the work. You may find you have an excess of £1000 for subsidence work. It is likely to be a drawn out process, as the first step is to monitor the cracks to see if they are getting bigger.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards.
