I've been buying sainsbury's Medium Sliced White Bread (800g) for the last month or so. It taste okay and I like it.

However I noticed the basic stuff was 8p cheaper. Not much of a difference, so I wondered if it was any good. With such a small difference in price surely it tastes nearly identical?

I buy the Sainsburys basics wholemeal. 48p a loaf, we mainly use bread for toast and this bread seems fine for our needs

  • 8p? Where do you live? It's usually 47/48p! Infact looking online it is coming up as 47p for me. My partner sometimes buys it but only for cheese toasties - home made bread doesn't fit into the sandwich maker, lol. He never complained about it and he can be really picky with food.

8P CHEAPER than the sainsbury's own brand stuff! not 8p per loaf, i wish it was though!:D

I'm not picky, so I think I'm going to risk it and try it out when I next go shopping:)

LOL that will teach me reading and responding on here while I'm watching the TV :rotfl:. Yeah 8p cheaper makes sense :o. Sorry about that (I also need new glasses so that doesn't help me either).

I can't imagine you would tell the difference if you toast it.

It does if you use a pullman pan/pain de mie to bake it in.
You can get one for a quarter of this price in a decent cookware shop or on ebay but to give you an idea what I mean. http://bakerybits.co.uk/Professional-Pullman-Bread-Pan-P760043.aspx
  • asda and tesco basics white bread plays havoc with my bodily functions shall i say at this time of the morning lol
but my son eats loads so maybe best to try urself and c how it goes but id give asdas a miss though !
  • Basic bread is okay. We swapped to HM bread which costs even less and tastes amazing :)

Oeeer! I always wondered how they got the soft crusts as it tends to be crisper with home baked, might get one if I can find it cheap enough!:)

  • Back on the subject, a friend who used to work at Tesco's once told me that the only difference between Tesco's basic and their ordinary bread was the wrapper it was put in, not sure if it's true or not but I have bought Basic's bread and found it perfectly edible!

  • I hate basics bread. I do buy a good few basics products, but basics bread is so bland, if I buy it then no one in my house will enjoy their pack ups and even leave sandwiches, so false ecomomy for my lot.
