Problems with Nissan Micra gearbox

I have a Nissan Micra shape 1997,the problem is that the reverse gear will not engage ,this happened without any prior warning all other gears are working perfectly .Does anyone have any ideas before my husband removes the gearbox.Many thanks

    Why on earth would your husband remove the gearbox if neither of you know what the hell is wrong?

    Assuming that there is actually some oil in it, the clutch might need adjusting or be on its way out.
