**Argh: Replaised this should be in 'quote' thread' How do I move? Or could a mod do it for me? Thanks*
think this question comes up every few months but ...
Just got a quote for just under £1200 inc vat for fitting carpet to stairs (in London).
There are 23 stairs in total.
There are two turns (one is 180 degrees, one is 90 degrees).
The carpet is running the full width of the stairs.
The carpet is expensive: £45/sqm.
Stairs are 70cm wide, standard height.
Quote includes, underlay (cloud9), grippers etc.
Basically, it's a start to finish job from bare floorboards.
Very knowledgeable company but an independent.
ANy thoughts? I know some people are instantly going to scream at this quote but remember:
1) It's expensive carpet.
2) It's london. ... Sigh
Thanks!

Tell us the split between material cost and labour cost. If you don't know it, go back to the fitter and ask - it's crucial. Then we'll be better placed to advise you on whether the fitting cost is reasonable or not.
We paid £1000 recently for stairs, landing, and 3 bedrooms (2 large). The stairs/landing carpet was excellent quality. We're not in London but I'm inclined to think your price is on the high side. Definitely get at least one more quote to compare.0 -
23 stairs plus the winders is 11.5 plus 3 = 14.5 m2 which is £650 without acounting for the landing.
As ever with every carpet query not enough information to go on. How much carpet do you need? On a hall stairs landing, the fitter/estimator will have done a plan, which will give him a figure of how many m2 you need. Without that everybody will just be guessing.
I would expect an underlay figure 2 or 3 m2 below that of the carpet on an HSL.
HSL's can be VERY wastefull though, depending on how the landing plans out, everything from no waste to 20-30% waste is emminantly possible.
for £45/m2 I'd be wanting to see a big name as the carpet though - Brintons/AxminsterUnless it is damaged or discontinued - ignore any discount of over 25%0 -
Here's the breakdown:
Carpet: 774 (ie 17.2 sqm)
Underlay: 125
Grippers: 60
Labour/FItting: 200
Appreciate the help!
The fitter has only seen pictures of the stairs and calculated it from knowing the number of turns, the width of the stair, and the number of stairs!
My guess is he's built himself some contingency therefore. BUt he's a good hour's round trip from us and he didn't think a pre-visit was necessary! (Sounds dodgy already, doesn't it?!)0 -
Sorry been so long to get back - good grief HUGE price for underlay he's charging about £10/m2 about £5.00 is right. £60 for gripper - again taking the P, a box of gripper that will do a HOUSE is about £20-30.
DO NOT get it done without someone measuring it.Unless it is damaged or discontinued - ignore any discount of over 25%0
