Debt to EON...need some advice!
Hi there,
I have abit of a problem with EON and I really don't know what to do, I'm hoping this forum can help me.
I have recently moved out of a property I lived at and had a few problems with the meters in the property. The landlord ensured me he had sent all the meter readings across and that all the bills were set up but I kept receiving letters from EON addressed to the landlord.
After awhile I decided to ring EON as I didn't want to open the mail but didn't want a debt amassing that I couldn't pay...low and behold they said that the landlord hadn't sent the meter readings and I owed alot of money. I set up a payment plan out of desperation so as not to accrue more debt and was supposed to be getting an inheritance payment which I was intending to pay the debt off with but I ended up getting in more of a mess because I'd set the payment plan amount too high and I couldn't afford it aswell as the payments being unable to be made by DD, meaning it was costing me a fortune just to ring EON to pay on my card. To make matters worse I didn't receive the inheritance due to a long and protracted legal battle with other relations so I can't pay it off in a lump sum as I intended to do so.
I've now moved home and obviously EON are chasing the debt and passing it on to a recovery company etc...I've made sure the new property is paid in full (ironically the supply is from EON also) but I am panicking about this debt and don't know what to do, I physically can't afford to pay off such a large sum but I want this to stop hanging over me as its making me sick with worry. I don't know what to do and any advice would be really helpful.
Thanks

You need to set down what you are spending each month, and what money you have free.
Explain why you had difficulty paying the previous agreed amount, and ask for another figure to be negotiated.
Perhaps bank statements in the periods you failed to pay, showing overdrafts, or penalties?0 -
Just tell them how much you can afford to pay per month. They will moan but accept almost anything as they won't want to take you to court which is their only other option as they won't do any better there.
I would not show them bank statements. It shouldn't be necessary.0 -
Hi evo_303,
Has the debt actually been passed fully to an external debt collector? if it has then you will need to deal with them now. They will normally be able to come to some sort of arrangement.
If the debt is still with E.ON then you need to contact us and agree to a payment arrangement that you can stick to.
We may be able to spread this over a longer period of time due to the difficulties that you are having.
Just as a side note, has the account been billed to accurate meter readings? did you take a record of the readings when you moved in and out?
Hope you get things sorted.

Hi guys, firstly can I just thank you for all your speedy responses they have been most helpful.
Firstly to answer some of your questions;
Helena no the debt has not been fully passed over as someone from the debt agency rang me and I told them I'd been speaking to eon direct and he just advised me to carry on down that route.
Africanviolet as far as I know the debt is mine butbas I said before I couldn't be sure due to the landlord supplying the meter readings direct to eon months after I moved in. I was never granted access to the meters in the property as they were locked in a communal access area.
To update you on the progress (or lack thereof!) I've managed to speak to eon at length this week and I've not really got anywhere. They have advised all they can do for me is spread the total cost over 10 months, this then means my expenditure on this would be over 15% of my monthly salary and I KNOW this is unfeasible and would lead me to getting into more debt, not fulfilling agreements and basically ending up in a bigger mess than I am now! What would be the best way forward now do you think? I really am trying my hardest to resolve this with eon direct as opposed to just avoiding their letters/calls anymore, as that doesn't help anyone.0 -
Hi evo_303,
Helena is not here at the moment, I hope you don't mind me answering your questions.
I have a few questions to ask if you don't mind.
Have you got your start and final meter readings? Are these reflected on this bill?
You should of had access to your meters at all times, Have you made any payments to the old property's balance?
I do think you should get in contact with us again and see if you can come to some sort of arrangement, as you have said you are struggling we may be able to spread the balance over a slightly longer period of time.

Hi Amy
No I don't mind, any help is welcome!
I have the final reading as supplied on handover of the keys from the property, no start as I say because of no access.
Yes I've made a good few payments when the first arrangement was made, but I was unable to pay on dd because of the debt on the account and I overcommitted in terms of the amount which got me in worse trouble.
Is there no preceden for eon to accept an affordable offer from me and I pay that balance within a predefined period? Thanks in advance0 -
How long did you live in the property?

Hi evo_303,
I would advise you to call the number on your EON bill, and advise them you are struggling and you want to set up a payment plan, I'm sure we will be able to come to arrangement you can stick to.
Give them a call and let me know what happens.

Hi guys.
After all your advise and trying to arrange a payment plan through eon they have taken me to a debt collection agency. The reason they ( the debt agents) have given is although I was trying to arrange something because I didn't give them some sort of funds they have passed the debt on and I have now incurred almost £300 of debt. My bill know stands at £1900 and they are saying unless I pay 1300+ upfront I need to pay 300 then 100 a month for 16 months. On the money I earn I cannot afford that but the debt agency is being very hard faced trying to bully me into payment plan I can't keep!! what should I do?!? They have said I have til 6pm fridayto pay money otherwise 'I'm in trouble!!'0
