OAP's need help
Hi I'm new to this and looking for advice for my elderly parents. My dad is 78 and my mum 75 and they stay in a small 2 bedroom ground floor flat but they are currently paying £180 PER MONTH for their electricity.. I think this is scandalous and I am now trying to help them. They are with Eon but have been with staywarm and a few other companies who all promised them cheaper tariff and then raised the cost. They have storage heater for their heating but they have a gas cooker. Out of 6 heater they only use 4. Surely this is far to much to be paying ? Or is this normal for storage heaters ? Does anyone have any advice or know what I can do to help them reduce the cost of their bills. Thanks in advance

Are they on an economy 7 tariff.
Are the heaters only being charged on that tariff, and being used during the night without extra 'boost'?
Are the dampers properly closed when heat is not needed?
Using too few heaters, and having the remaining ones providing heat, as they've run out directly from expensive electricity is a bad idea!0 -
Get their annual usage in kWh from one of their recent E.On bills and use a comparison site to find out if they're on a reasonable tariff.
Then look at ways to reduce their usage. If they only use gas for cooking, that is probably fairly insignificant and it will be their heating cost which is the major factor.
As already said, check if they have economy 7 and are making the best use of it. Even if they don't understand it all, make it your business to and you may well be able to save them some money.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the In My Home MoneySaving, Energy and Techie Stuff boards. Hi JenWall65,
I agree with the other guys, we need to know what tariff they are on and if the are being billed on E7 or not.
If they have storage heaters then they would be better off on E7.
As victor2 says, ask for the usage in kWh for the last 12 months, you can also ask E.ON to do comparisons on tariff's that we offer. You can then pop the usage in a comparison site.
We also have an Energy Efficiency department that can help with reducing usage, along with the interactive house on the website and other bits and bobs.
If you need any more info from me, just ask.

Another thing to check (assuming they have economy 7) is that the heating is coming on during the Economy 7 times properly and not during the day or at odd hours..
Occasionaly the times can get knocked out of sync and the heating will be charged at full rate.
Also, you dont mention if there is any debit on the account, could it be possible they have worked up some debit and the computer at E-on has said they need to pay £180 a month to pay it off?Missing Tesco R&R since Feb '07 :A & now a "Tesco veteran" apparently!
