Solicitor - does he want his money too soon?

I've just had a letter from my Solicitor setting out the sum he will need to complete. He said he wants the money NOW yet we haven't got a completion date yet.
I'll never be a Money Saving Expert while my kids are Mony Spending Experts.

  • As a Conveyancing Solicitor I do think the extra fee for filling in the SDLT form is a rip off - see some other scams mentioned on my website at http://www.rwco.co.uk/No_Hidden_Extras.htm Most of the time if a buyer is getting a mortgage the solicitor has to control the situation and needs to have a completed form before completion. You can do it yourself and save you the money. Did he tell you there would be this extra fee when he first quoted for the work?

    As far as when the money is paid, I agree it is a bit OTT. He should be able to tell you aweek or so before completion and that should be plenty of time to get any funds by building society cheque. (Although they are very unlikely to bounce, they are not actually cleared funds so still have to allow a lcearance cycle time because otherwise our banks say we are drawing against unbcleared funds!)

    richard as a solicitor can you help me?
    we have agreed to the charges made by are sol and didnt know we could fill out our SDLT form ourselves we are being charged £60 for it so we would like to save this if we could. can we do this after we have agreed the charges

    take off the £65 !! if he comes across "extras" you can always send another cheque !!!!
