Acer Travelmate 2200 Bettery Problems

I have an Acer Travelmate that I picked up off Ebay about a year ago for the kids to keep them away from mine. The laptop has worked fine up until the last couple of weeks. I was told that this make of laptop doesn't run for very long off battery power so I have always had it plugged into the mains.

About two weeks ago I found that after using it for a while the battery warning indicator came on and even though it was plugged into the mains the laptop was running off battery power and it would drain quickly then switch off. I found initially that a reboot would normally solve the problem and it would start to run off the mains again and charge the battery up.

This weekend the problem has got worse and a reboot wouldn't work. The laptop would power up but then as it wasn't charging the battery it would shut down. After a couple of reboots it would ocasionally start charging up again but it wouldn't last long before the warning indicator comes on and drains whats left of the power and switches off.

I left it switched off for 24 hours and tried it again and this time its working normal, but I suspect its only a matter of time before it goes again. It also seems to coincide with the laptop getting hotter.

Any clues to what I need to do? I've googled it but come up with many different solutions. Starting to think maybe the battery is on its way out?

Thanks :)

Have you tried running it with the battery removed?

Now I am going to look like a techie noob, but I always thought the battery had to be in, didn't realise you could run it without :o

Just tried it and its running fine. Guess as I always run it off the mains then I just keep the battery out and it will be fine :D

    Thanks neveragain :)
