Fitting Kitchen Units in Front of Window

Options
Does anyone know if you can install units in front of a window where the bottom of the window ends below the top of the unit? I have seen this done in period properties where the windows cannot be changed. Is it ok to do?

Thanks.

Women and cats will do as they please, and men and dogs should relax and get used to the idea.
  • Interesting question - we're about to do this as we have no choice; we've got a large but low sash window in our kitchen with a deep windowsill and it's the ONLY place we can put our sink/cabinet. The walls are 2.5 foot thick stone (Georgian property) but it would cause too much disruption and expense to jiggle things around. Is your sink going under your window, or a standard cabinet?
I was worried about how ours would look, but we've got a traditional ceramic butler's sink and antique taps, so hopefully it'll lessen the 'blow' as it were.

  • My sister had this problem. She put her sink unit across front of the window. She built a panel behind the back of sink unit about a tile high to stop water slopping down onto the sill below. It actually looks very nice. She has put pots of herbs on the sill so it looks pretty from the outside. Almost like an internal window box!!

You just need to panel out the rear of the unit, also you can fix a plastic film to the lower section of the window to obscure it from view.
