Time limit to notify change of keeper?

Excuse me if I'm being thick here :)

Bought untaxed car the other day and storing it in work car park until I sell my own (can't afford two insurance policies and cancellation headaches etc).

I don't know how long it will take to sell my car. I'm aware of the fact that I need to notify of change of keeper asap but if I send off the v5 slip now how will I tax the car?

Can I get away with leaving it for up to two weeks?

*Confused*

Register it as SORN. You can do this online even though it's not yet registered to you if you have the V5, or at least the green tear off slip.

You can't tax it online until it's been registered to you for about 6 weeks though, but with the SORN it doesn't matter too much if the letter goes to the old address confirming it's been done.

Does you work car park have locked gates ?
If not and it can be driven in to then DVLA may clamp the car.

In answer the your other question, keep the green tear off slip new keeper slip, you can tax the car at the Post Office with this. The last owner should have sent off the rest of the V5, but if they haven't just send it off now.

    Thanks for the replies.

I got the car from auction so I have the full v5.

I suppose I'm concerned that I'll send off the sorn form in post with the risk that it isn't processed before I'm ready to tax it anyway (sound neurotic but this is dvla!). They might sorn it then and void the tax?

If it is a private car park then DVLA will not be able to go in and clamp the vehicle as long as it has been properly declared SORN.

You should also be aware that if the car is not declared SORN and is not insured, you are committing the new offence of keeping an uninsured vehicle - irrespective of whether it is on the public road or not.
