Natural Moth Repellent

We've moved a large heavy sideboard to decorate and found an infestation of case bearing clothes moths in the carpet which has been well chomped on. OH has hoovered area VERY thoroughly with vacuum cleaner (super suction Henry) and I've googled to see how I can prevent a further infestation. I've read that cedar shavings, lavendar and rosemary are all natural repellents so I'm considering putting a few springs of rosemary under and behind the sideboard when we move it back.

Has anyone tried this? Does it work? Any other ideas?

I might be tempted to sprinkle some lavender essential oil on the chomped carpet too ( or rosemary) I take it the cupbard covers the eaten section up?

We had moths in the kichen a while back, and they got into the muesli and similar stuff and I had to throw tons away Grrrr. I'm blaming it on global warming!

Make sure you kill any moths that appear too, squishing :) is very green and cheap LOL! Other wise they will start breeding again!

Thanks katieowl. Yes the sideboard will cover up the area but I want to treat it before it is heaved back into position to stop the chomping spreading. I've got a big bush of rosemary in the garden, so will make a few little sachets and add some cloves and rosemary too - I think I may have some lavender essential oil. Might as well EXTERMINATE EXTERMINATE! Oh dear .....

Cedar oil is apparently supposed to be good, in olden days the insides of wardrobes and chests were made of cedar to repel moths.

A dalek? Trying to lure Dr Who I guess.
  • If you can hoover the underneath of the sideboards, there could be moths hanging on under there!

What on earth would make a moth want to eat a carpet or clothes.... bizarre animals... Although, I suppose; dont knock it till youve tried it!

I can't hoover underneath it as it is solid to the floor.... they must be strong little .....moths/larvae! I've only just discovered they are "case bearing clothes moths"! Might be handy to take on holiday!

They're otherwise known as "Tinea pellionella" - perhaps they chomp wool carpets and clothes to make their own little coats/cases?

these things are so annoyinng - we have just discovered that they have comped all the way through OH's kilt!!!! It is not repearable so has cost us £300 plus. Thankfully we can make a claim on our house hold insurance.

I have used lavender and ceder in teh past and found it ok. This time I am ashamed to say we are resorting to 'moth balls' provided by my mother!!!!

I have given the wardrobe a good clean and hoover and think we have nipped it in the bud - little blighters

I can't promise that all my replies will illicit this response :p
  • Had a lovely winter coat and some woolies chomped last year. We got a lemon scented sachet, and some bits of ceder wood from lakeland which seem to have fixed the problem. Only £4.99 for the bits of wood (gone to £5.99 now). The sachet thing is the anti-moth wardrobe freshener on this link: http://www.lakeland.co.uk/SearchResults.aspx?kw=moth
