Car insurance help

Hiya, I am a 26 year old female, and I passed my test about 3 weeks ago.

My boyfriend owns two cars, one a corsa, and the other a honda accord.

We have been looking at insurance qoutes for the corsa, if he was to give me his car, so that I was the owner and have the insurance policy in my name the qoute is around £1000

However if my boyfriend was to keep the car in his name, and add me on as a additional named driver the qoute is £500

My boyfriend would only really use the corsa on occassions, and I would be driving it during the week.

Is it ok to do the qoute in his name, and me be a named driver? as I dont think we can afford £1000 for the 1st year of my insurance, but £500 we just could.

Can he be the main driver on both cars?

Any help would be great

Thanks in advance

It is called 'fronting' and is not legal. The fact that he has 2 cars will ring some alarm bells, you would be the 'main driver' and not the additional driver. Also remember if he has no claim discount this can only be used one one policy (unless he has a policy to insure multiple vehicles)

If you search the forum on fronting you will see some posts about the implications, to both you and your boyfriend

    No.
You cannot say he's the main driver if you are the main driver.
This is called a "material fact" and what the insurer bases the risk/premium on.

If you have a claim and they check and find out, they can not only pursue you for 3rd party claims (may be five figures), but they can also cancel your insurance which you have to declare forever and will hinder you getting insurance forever.
I'm sure you were genuinely unaware rather than intending to commit fraud, but as you can see the implications can be serious.

If you can't afford it then you need to look at other transport options or work out a way to get more income (2nd job at Argos at Xmas?).
Persumably you had a way to tranport yourself 3 weeks ago, so perhaps you need to continue with that and save up until you can afford it.
Sorry if that sounds harsh but we've all been in a position where we want stuff we can't afford.

The two cars can still be owned and insured in his name, but he should declare that you are the main driver of the Corsa.

(Named drivers can be shown as the Main Driver)

However, you should check if his existing insurance company will credit you with any No Claims Bonus entitlement for the period you are insured as a named main driver on his policy. If not, then be aware that you could benefit in the long term by taking out your own policy to start earning NCD entitlement.

  • We are in a similar situation - my 21 year old daughter is the main driver of one of my wife's cars. We have taken a policy out in our daughters name (so that she can accrue her own NCD entitlement) with my wife as the registered keeper, my daughter as the main driver and with my wife and I as named drivers. However, my wife's friend thinks that my daughter would not be able to make a claim on this insurance policy as she is not the owner of the car and she could not be compensated for property that she does not own - is that the case? If so, should we cancel the policy and set one up in my wife's name with my daughter declared as the main driver? What would the NCD situation be in this case? What is the best way for my daughter to accrue her own NCD? Would it be simplest to just transfer the car's ownership to our daughter? Thanks

Presumably you have delared the registered keeper to your insurers? There should not be a problem in the event of a claim as I believe - others may correct me - that if the vehicle was a write off the payment would be to the registered keeper.

Only issue you would have is if you have not disclosed all of this to insurers.

I agree with the previous post, if you have informed the insurance company of all the facts as per your post here, then you have done everything correctly and should not have any problems if / when you need to make a claim.
