Remove Chipboard Floor?

I have tongue and groove chipboard sheet flooring upstairs. I want to replace this with 'proper' floor boards. Does anyone know of any kind of saw (hopefully a powered one) which will cut very close to the wall? I want to cut out the old floor, lay new boards and cover the 'edges' with the skirting board. ???

  • Thanks for this SCat but what I really need is something with an offset blade (bit like a meat slicer at the butchers!). Most machines have central blades so the cut will be at least half the machine width away from the wall and won't be covered by the skirting when it's replaced. Help! :o

Been there, seen it, done it.......

Safest is an electricians flooring saw. Other methods below are a lot quicker.

I had to replace chip with chip. I cut it out a square and then used a biscuit joiner around the edges to join the sawn (and therefore square edged) boards back together. A biscuit joiner is really just a 3" saw blade.

I had to get right up against a wall. 2 ways:

    1) hack off the side of the baseplate (the thin bit) and guard of my cheap circular saw.

    2) use the biscuit joiner which can be adjusted right down (or at least mine can).

Both worked quite well and meant that I could control the depth so not cutting through pipes etc. as you would with a jigsaw et al.
  • Thanks MisterT2 - will check it out. I just lurve biscuits! ;D
  • The long blades are quit flexible and can be bent to run flush with the skirt provided you protect the skirt with say formica.
I have used angle grinder fitted with saw blade, but very dusty and can be dangerous. Motor really needs to be slowed with speed controller.
Why not just remove skirts and replace later?

  • I am going to take the skirtings off - but I still need something which will cut reeaally close to the wall. Mr Unbelievable is a health and safety bod so I'm not allowed to do anything too dangerous! (big shame he's not a DIY bod too!!) :-/

Someone told me that you can get adjustable mitre saws which may be okay for the job - but can't find anything so far.
