EDF Vs Scottish Power

Hi,

I am currently with EDF on their Online s@ver v7 for both gas and electricity. Since January 2011 I have been paying £31.00 per month. I have just had my latest g&e bills through and after those being debited from my account balance I now have £3.00 remaining. OK that would seem that I am just about paying enough but I appreciate that would need to increase a bit especially with the price rises EDF have announced. So on that bill EDF say they are increased my DD from £31.00 per month to £67.00 :eek: that's a little extreme don't you think?

So after trying several times to ring EDF on their freephone number and waiting up to 10mins I can't get in contact with them.

I used to be with Scottish Power before I switched to EDF and I did like them but EDF at the time were cheaper and offered £100 cash back via quidco so I went with them. A couple of days ago someone from SP rang me and done the comparison and apparently a deal called 'online fixed priced energy deal Dec 2012' was 17% cheaper than what I'm currently on but the minimum DD amount would have to be £40.00 -fair enough.

Now I have sat down with all my EDF bills and tried to work out the rates and I'm not overly convinced SP is cheaper.

EDF Rates;
Elec - 9.78p kWh Standing charge 27.55p per day.
Gas - 3.141p kWh Standing Charge 24.37p per day.

Scottish Power offering;
Elec - first 225 kWh each qtr 18.771p/9.622p after that
Gas - first 670 kWh each qtr 6.616p/6.947p after that

The above prices are less VAT.

So, is the SP one cheaper than the EDF one?

Thanks in advance for your replies.

    You really shoulkd be in considerable credit at this time of year, in prearation for the dar, cold (and hence costly) winter period. The fact you are not is almost certainly the reason that your supplier is now looking to ensure you pay more, before you start racking up large debts.

    To discover what would be the cheaper/cheapest option for you, consult one of the comparison sites. Enter your annual usage in kWh for the most accurate output :)

    Don't forget also that if you leave the OS7 deal now you'll have to pay exit fees to EDF. The contract is due to end at the end of the year so that is probably the time to move.

    No one can tell you which is cheaper without knowing your annual kWh consumption. Do your own calc in seconds on a comp site, as Premier suggests.
    With only £3 credit at mid-October, your DD does need to increase steeply-£31 pm is wholly inadequate for a dual fuel tariff in any property.

    Hi, a couple of years ago we had a situation like this where we had trusted EDF to set our DD with figures we gave them from a previous property so they knew what we used. Our usuage didn't change yet they had set our DD too low and let this go for over a year before deciding they wanted to nearly triple our DD so I will never use them again especially considering I rang and asked to put it up and was told it would average out. Who is cheaper would really depend on how much you use as if you are a low user then the higher payment for the first so many KWH would probably be more expensive. I personally am in the process of changing to SP and I found they were cheaper from two different comparison sites

    I never though of the exit fees :( Thank you so much for pointing that out.

    I guess I'm going to have to ring SP to cancel - they won't be happy!
  • Im with scottish power and have been for over four years. Reason for me not switching is because i enter my elec and gas readings every single month. I am now £60 in credit whereas last year I was more in credit. I pay £54 a month for gas and electric and if they set it too high i tell them what i want to pay because I am in control of what I use.

    Firstly i only use the lights when needed, everything is switched off at the sockets at night. Heating only goes on when needed. Gas fire only used sporadically when snow comes.

    I never let them estimate the readings, its my readings online that create a correct bill. Im on online standard (standing charge).
    They have estimated £639 for next twelve months. - discount of £31.71. So I intend to not overuse my gas.

    When Im at work its off.
    I have gas cooker and oven.
    There is only me and my two cats in the house.:D

    From the new EDF prices and my past 9month bills calculated at the current price I have worked out that my G&E will be £48.00 per month. Let's call it £50.00. Do you think EDF would drop their proposed £67.00 monthly DD down to £50.00? I would ask them if I ever got through to them.

    Considering I have used a combined £279.00 for both gas and elc for the first 9months of this year I think I'm pretty good at switching stuff off and submitting my readings when and if they request. EDF online are a bit rubbish (I must preferred SP) but I got £100.00 cashback for switched to EDF at the start of the year so I have only really paid them £179.00 for the year so far :cool:

    If I cancelled my DD and just manually paid them each month would that mess up my tariff prices? I might do it anyway because it's the only way I can get in contact with them. 28mins I waited yesterday to get through and nothing :mad:

    Don't! If you cancel the DDs you will be deemed to be off the OS7 tariff and on the standard tariff. You will have to pay the exit fees for OS7 as well as losing the DD discount and paying higher tariff charges.
