Caught Speeding - Likely Fines?

Options
Thanks for looking guys!

I have been caught speeding in Wales (A55 eastbound)

It was on a dual carriageway and the speed limit kept fluctuating from a 50 to a 70.

I hold my hands up, no excuses etc - I was in the wrong.

I was caught doing 82mph in a 50mph.

Does anyone have any idea or experiences on what my likely punishment will be??

Are the following circumstances likley to help?

- I was driving a hire car (so not familiar)
- I was not local to the area and as the speed limit kept changing, perhaps it was a little confusing?
- I only have 3 points on my license which have now expired anyway.
- My car is necessary for my work (visiting clients)

I genuinely didn't realise how fast I was going.

I'm going to have to go to court aren't I?

If anyone has a similar experience or advice I'd be glad to hear it.

By the way, I was caught by an unmarked car and they had one of the guns not a picture one.

Thanks in advance!!

I always thought if you were caught at over 30mph above the limit (which you were) then it went straight to court, and a ban was very likely.

But I'm not sure, I was only caught once, and I was only 17mph above the limit. I get 3 points and a £60 fine.

Check https://www.pepipoo.com/ as they will be able to advise you better.

I know the 50mph stretch you mean, it seems totally pointless really.

Have you been back to the location and double checked the speed limit signs were all in order? Should be one on both sides of the road as you enter the zone, should not be obscured by trees etc)... You could also check that the limits were properly requested (like planning permission procedure) and applied by the council....this may be a new one on a lot of people but there was a case near me where the speeding tickets all had to be refunded because the signs were put up without following proper procedure.

Did the car follow you? inwhich case he should have been at a constant distance with a constant speed.

Or was it a stationary speed trap? in which case there will no doubt be rules needing following, anyway agree with above, pepipoo is the authorative place for all speeding get outs.

No idea about the fine/court, but I'd be surprised if you got more than 6 points and £500

I got caught doing 97 in a 60. £30 and 3 points. Might have been a 70 limit I suppose. Good luck getting off.

Look on the speedtrap bible, there's a table of offences and results from real cases on there.
If you're lucky you'll get 3 points and £60. You might have to go to court.

Welsh plod are goits for this I'm afraid - their Chief believes speeders are the worst thing on the planet. I can only say to wait and see what you are offered, and check the sites the others have mentioned :-(
  • I was doing 60mph in a 40mph zone (just come off a stretch of 60mph road and totally unaware of decrease in limit, exactly the same type of road so no idea why the limit went down to 40mph).

I got court papers which said I didn't have to attend although I could write an excuse if I had one (I didn't). I was fined £120 and got 3 points.

I also got caught in wales petty much the same thing. After driving 25,000 miles in that year I'm suddenly a bad driver a I was doing 82mph at 5.30am in the morning on the M4. (cant remember the location but there is a long straight which goes downhill and then uphill for a long way and its very very clear visabiliy).

As for your fine. Anything 30mph over the limit gets flagged and you will most probably have to go to court. Should be either 3 or 6 points with a heavier fine. Fine's go up to £1000. I should think your fine will be around £300. If 3 points are given, expect £500. I would rather have the 3 points and £500 personally!

You were done for speeding not dangerous driving presumably. So it's not anything to do with how safe it was to drive at that speed, it's just that legislation provides that nowhere in the UK on the highway is it legal (for you and me) to drive faster than 70mph.
  • Thanks everyone for all your help and advice and the useful links! I do appreciate it and if anyone else can add anything please do.

    Thanks
