And HMRC won't raise any questions if the employer pays up to 45p per mile these days.

OP, if you do not have insurance for business use on your car, then DO NOT USE IT ON BUSINESS USE. And if you are asked to do so, decline politely as you are not insured.

I'd check you're insured for commuting, and you could if you wanted ask how much it would cost to add business use. But if you don't have it, don't do it. It won't be the company picking up the bill if a claim is denied.

    Thanks Sue, good advice.

I'm certainly not going to be driving my personal vehicle for company purposes now, regardless of how many pence per mile!

This is a very helpful forum. I wish i'd discovered it years ago :T

    C) "Your employer can make you take all or any holiday at any time, so long as they give notice." I think this is for Christmas time, when the company closes from 24th into January, but am I agreeing that if, say, March is going to be a very quiet month work-wise, but we are predicted to have a busy summer they can tell me I need to use 2 weeks of my holiday entitlement, even though I have a holiday booked in July?
You may be surprised to learn this, but they can do this already. The law says that the employer has every right to tell you when you can and can't take your holiday. If you book two weeks off in July, then are allowed, by law, to give you notice that they need you and you would have to attend work or face the possibility of disciplinary action. Morally wrong, but not unlawful. And yes, even if you've booked the holiday, paid for it, and your wife has taken time off work.

Can my employer make me use lieu time or holidays (without notice) by sending me home for 2hrs to then go back and work for 1hr. If I had to do this it would
    a) cost me in bus fares
    b) by the time I got home it would be time to go back to work.

What does your contract say? Does it specify start and finish times, how many hours per day, how many hours per week etc?

What line of work are you in? 'split shifts' are, I believe, quite common in the hospitality industry.

  • I work 5 over 7 days, 9am to 5.30pm, no split shifts, 16 contracted hours with some expected overtime. I was just curious as to whether this can happen or not, up to now it has only been a passing comment between staff that it could be on the cards

There's a very comprehensive reply to a similar question here. If the employer wants to do this for some reason, they should consult about the change, but don't be in any doubt that they can make it whether you like it or not.

In your situation, I'd be looking around. but I'd also be talking to colleagues to see if we can think of ways to avoid the need to introduce split shifts.

I don't know what the legalities of your situation are, but if my manager asked me why I was doing in my free time, the answer would be that I have made personal arrangements that I am not prepared to alter. I wouldn't tell them the details of what I was doing, as I really don't think it's their concern, so I can see why you're miffed (if this is a new situation.)

Has the weekend thing come up before and is it considered a normal part of the role, or is it a new development?

I agree with this comment, if you choose to tell people what you are doing in your free time then that is up to you, likewise if you choose not to tell them. Personally I don't think that it really is any business of theirs what you are doing in your free time and I too would have said I have personal arrangements and left it at that.
