Stopped paying into NHS pension and got taxed?

The OH also feels that by the time he does qualify for his pension, which is now 67 years of age, he may have snuffed it by then:eek:
As all above have said big mistake.
Furthermore the above is plain wrong. The NHS pension is payable at 65 (2008 scheme) -nothing to do with State pension age and changes in that.0 -

The OP's OH will no doubt have been listening to the unions who are pushing the increase in pension age under the changes being proposed.0 -
And yet those same union bosses will be taking in great salaries with great pensions. All for manipulating and being untruthful to their members.
A lot of people (and possibly the op) will think we are all sour grapes types. I am not, really. I try to help PS workers to keep their pensions, even though it costs the country more money than if they like the OP's OH, quit it. But, it really is the best thing going now. Even after the changes.
And All I can think is to try and stop them from making such a huge bad decision for themselves even if it may help the rest of us.0 -

Some of them will be, yes.
A lot of them though are just ordinary members who don't know much more about it themselves.
If they don't knwo anything abut it, they souldn't be giving advice to fellow members, esp if they are being paid to do so.
I wonder, as union reps are supposed to give their members the best advice, should we regulate them and get them all on a 'mis-selling' case in that they are encouraging their members to sell out of their pensions (which any IFA would be sued to death for doing?)0 -
No, No, public sector pensions are the worst ever, staying in them will only cause you to lose money.... ****
**** Actually not true but it might save me in lower taxes in the future.0 -

That was my point. They are not being paid for it. They are doing it in their own time mostly. Higher up the chain they are being paidI wonder, as union reps are supposed to give their members the best advice, should we regulate them and get them all on a 'mis-selling' case in that they are encouraging their members to sell out of their pensions (which any IFA would be sued to death for doing?)
They are not being encouraged to leave. The members are coming to their own conclusions based on the pay more, work longer, get less campaign. However most don't know how it compares with other schemes.0 -

I am guilty of doing this. Generally without, being big-headed, I usually microscopically research everything and have a good understanding etc.
However I am guilty of nearly bowing down to the brainwashing of being told my pension is worth nothing. I work for a local council and contribute 6.5% a month of my pre tax earnings. I am constantly being told, particularly by the older generation that I will get nothing.
Doesn't help this week that Unison are constantly giving out flyers asking us to vote yes to a strike on the 30th of Nov as the scheme is going to change and I am going to have to pay 13% for less benefits blah blah.
Anyway, my point is I was saved from my own stupidity in this case my other members of this site. I was going to come out of it and use the money to OP my mortgage even more and then buy more properties instead of paying into, but after being help I can see I was wrong.
I think I am being made redundant in April, so now I am all geared up not to transfer it etc.
My point is, please tell your colleagues not to be drawn in by the !!!!!!!!e.
I know it is easily done with all the Unions scare mongering.
I think I am going to start a thread asking other poster to give me a balanced view of the proposed changes.
Atush, Hugheski and a few others. I am truly grateful for you words of advice. You really did stop me from making a huge mistake!

Jess,
Glad you are staying put. And if you do get made redundant, and have to get a job in the private sector, your old LG pension will be the best thing you will have to look forwards to in your retirement even if you start a new one elsewhere.
In the mean time, tell your friends at work that Unison is telling porkies and for them to stay put as well.0
